Although 2009 was a down year for just about any business, hotels and the lodging industry were hit particularly hard.

Amy Wykoff, director of sales at the Embassy Suites in Lombard, has worked at the hotel for seven years and for Hilton Hotels for 12 years. She agrees that 2009 has been the worst year for the hotel and the industry.

"2009 has been the roughest year we have seen as far as occupancy," Wykoff said.

Lombard is not alone when it comes to problems in the hotel industry. Consultant Mark Lomanno of Smith Travel Research in Hendersonville, Tenn., reported the national demand for hotel rooms in 2009 fell below the dip the lodging industry experienced immediately after Sept. 11, 2001.

"This has been the worst economical downturn as far as corporate travel," Wykoff said. "It's been worse than 9/11."

The Atlanta-based PKF Hospitality Research group reported that in 2009, the U.S. lodging industry experienced the greatest annual decline in revenue since the Great Depression in 1932.

"It's been bad, because it's so easy to get a deal out there," Wykoff said. "And people are unsure when the market is going to come back."

Wykoff said the hotel expects an increase in sales in March. She said Embassy Suites is still a top leader in the market.

According to the Lombard Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Executive Director Yvonne Invergo, there are 14 hotels in Lombard.

One of the village's best-known hotels, the Westin Hotel, was just opened a few years ago. The short time it has been open makes it too difficult to analyze whether it has seen a major decline.

Village President Bill Mueller also serves as the chairman for the village's Community Promotion and Tourism Committee.

"We're projecting our revenue of our coming year to be around $1.5 million; that is down $500,000, or 25 percent, from last year," Mueller said. "The tax is very important to Lombard because it's another form of revenue for our community."

The hotel/motel tax fund provides grants for important Lombard events such as the Taste of Lombard and the Lilac Parade.

Mueller also said it is important for the hotels to do well because they generate revenue for the numerous Lombard restaurants.

"We're hoping to see an increase in the coming year to offset some of the costs we've had to cut back on," Mueller said.
