Water park first, then hotels later for Mesa

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - A slump in the lodging industry has led the developer of Mesa's Waveyard to push the water park first before building the resort part.

Waveyard co-owner Richard Mladick is reassuring the city the project isn't all wet and that investor interest is strong in the water park with a phased-in resort development approach.

The $250 million project has a mid-2011 deadline from Mesa to begin construction near Loop 202 and Dobson Road. The bulk of the project is supposed to open at the same time, but Mladick said it might be necessary to build in phases.

Mesa Mayor Scott Smith couldn't say whether he'd support building the water park first because no specific plan has come forward to date.

Smith said he's open to discussing the option.
