Royal Host's revenue falls as room rates fall at the trust's hotels

Posted: 12 May 2010 08:27 AM PDT

HALIFAX, N.S. - Royal Host Real Estate Investment Trust (TSX:RYL.UN) says the average room prices charged at its portfolio of hotels fell in the first quarter, as did revenue per room, due to the competitive environment in Canada's lodging industry.

The Halifax-based real-estate trust said revenue from its hospitality business declined to $20.7 million in the first three months of 2010 from $21.7 million in the first quarter of 2009.

The occupancy rate during the seasonally slow quarter improved to 50 per cent, up one percentage point from the first quarter of 2009 when Canada was gripped by a global recession.

The average daily rate fell, however, to $97.11 from $100.45 and revenue per available room dropped to $48.60 from $49.19.

Royal Host's hospitality expenses also fell, to $17.8 million from $18.6 million, but its income from investments more than tripled to $10.9 million from $3.2 million.

Net income was $6.7 million, after subtracting a loss from discontinued operations. That compared with a net loss of $1.6 million in the first quarter of 2009.

The profit amounted to 35 cents per unit, including a two-cent loss from discontinued operations. A year earlier, the loss was seven cents per unit.

Distributions declared during the quarter were 7.5 cents per unit, down from 16.5 cents per unit in the first quarter of 2009.
