| Hotels Do Their Part To Keep it Green Posted: 14 May 2010 08:14 PM PDT HOUSTON - Many companies are making changes to be earth friendly; in part, to earn your business. That includes the travel industry. Meteorologist John Dawson looks into what hotels are doing to be greener. Surveys show that most people would choose a green hotel given the choice, but most people also think they can't afford to stay at one. With a little research, you'll find that doesn't have to be the case for the traveler. For a hotel it is certainly more expensive to build and maintain a property that is green. From the stringent building and design requirements all the way the way down to the natural cleaning products, it can all be very expensive. But most chains don't want to pass the cost on to their customers. They are making the extra effort and expenses to earn your stay and because they feel it's the right thing to do for our planet. "For us, yes the cost is greater," explained Tom Douglas the general manager of Element by Westin. "We obviously have less of a profit margin than maybe the competition across the street but that's important for us not to pass it along to the guest." LEED certified is the toughest and most sought after seal for any kind of green building. Element is the only LEED certified hotel in Houston and most of those standards were met during design and construction. "The cushions are stuffed with recycled products. The carpet is made from recycled material," says Douglas. "In the rooms you'll find hardwood floors that are made from recycled tires. And you find items like that throughout the hotel that are, at on point in their life time, another product before they ended up here." Energy star appliances, efficient lighting, a saltwater pool, and water conserving bathroom fixtures are all things you will see hotels doing to reduce their carbon footprint. While some hotels are built green, the Hilton Americas in downtown Houston is a good example of a property making changes to become greener. Recently they installed a water recycling system in the laundry facility cutting usage by 75 percent. It conserves 5.5 millions of gallons of drinking water every year and keeps the same amount of waste water, and its toxins, out of the treatment plants. So it can be MORE GREEN, for you and our planet.
