Sweetwater County lodging tax up for renewal vote

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 04:17 PM PDT

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. (AP) - Sweetwater County commissioners are supporting an extension of the county's 2 percent lodging tax.

Voters will decide Nov. 2 whether to renew it. Revenue from the tax on overnight stays at area hotels, campgrounds, and bed-and-breakfast establishments helps pay for marketing the county to visitors.

Sweetwater County Travel and Tourism Executive Director Jenissa Bartlett says a study in 2009 showed that for every $1 spent on advertising by the county travel and tourism Board, $2.24 came back to the county in the form of spending by visitors on hotels, meals, gas, souvenirs and other items. That is down from $7 in 2008, but Bartlett says the number should rebound as the economy improves.
