CHALETS

Several operators offer catered chalets or chalet-hotels. Hannibals' chalet Marmottes is a well renovated old farmhouse in old Chantemerle, five minutes from the lifts, with rooms all en suite.

HOTELS

One of the features of this string of little villages is the range of attractive family-run hotels – many of them members of the generally reliable Logis de France consortium.

Le Monetier

*** Auberge de Choucas (0492 244273) Smart but small wood-clad rooms; serious restaurant. We have enjoyed a stay there.

** Europe (0492 244003) Simple well-run Logis in heart of old village, with pleasant bar and good food.

** Alliey (0492 244002) 'Excellent rooms with an indoor/outdoor pool and spa.' Good restaurant.

Rif Blanc (0492 244135) Good value, friendly, refurbished hotel. Popular bar.

Villeneuve

*** Christiania (0492 247633) Civilised, family-run hotel on main road, crammed with ornaments.

** Vieille Ferme (0492 247644) Stylish conversion on the edge of the village.

* Chatelas (0492 247474) Prettily decorated simple chalet by river in old part of town.

Chantemerle

**** Best Western Premier (0492 222090) 300m from the lifts, spacious apartments, helpful staff, small indoor-outdoor pool, sauna. Book a room well away from the main road. We enjoyed a stay here in 2009; but a 2010 visitor was very critical of service and facilities.

** Grand (0492 241516) Right by the lifts; 80 varied rooms.

** Boule de Neige (0492 240016) In the old centre. Good past reports.

* Ricelle (0492 240019) Charming, but across the valley from the slopes in Villard-Laté. Good food.

Maison du Bez (0492 248696) Ski-in/ski-out, traditional, 'quirky with cosy lounge'. Outdoor hot tub.

APARTMENTS

There is an increasing supply of high-quality residences. In the Lagrange Prestige range is Le Hameau du Rocher Blanc, by the slopes in Chantemerle (pool, gym, sauna, steam).

The Best Western hotel (see above) offers apartments with hotel facilities, bookable through Peak Retreats and Erna Low. Pierre & Vacances has two properties, both approved by recent reporters. The hotel Alliey in Le Monêtier has apartments too.

AT ALTITUDE

Pi Maï (0492 248363) above Villeneuve and the Chalet Hotel Serre Ratier (0492 205288) above Chantemerle have rooms (see also 'Mountain restaurants').

Peachtree Hotel Group Expands Its Portfolio

Peachtree Hotel Group (PHG), a lodging organization focused on operating and investing in premium select service and extended-stay hotels today announced the addition of two first mortgage note purchases and one hotel acquisition, growing their portfolio to 13 properties. The total value of all three acquisitions exceeded $20 million.

PHG acquired and currently manages the Four Points by Sheraton in downtown San Antonio, Texas. The 116-room hotel is strategically located in the heart of the business district and within a few steps from the Riverwalk and Convention Center.

PHG, through an affiliate, acquired two first mortgage notes in the second quarter of 2010. The first was a SpringHill Suites by Marriott in a suburb of Philadelphia and the second, a Holiday Inn Express in Birmingham, Alabama. The Holiday Inn Express in Birmingham, Alabama is now managed by Peachtree.
